"Arc de Triomphe: Avenue de Ferdinand".
Watercolour on 200lb paper, 39 by 33 cm. (ref. 1123)
This was based on a detailed sketch Don executed in Paris. He has emphasised the mass and detail of the Arc de Triomphe and also fused it into the background behind the poplar trees. He has also populated the pavements full of life and colour which is typical of this vibrant city of Paris."Enjoying the Sun: A Bridge on a Quiet River".
Watercolour on Fabriano 100% cotton paper 41 by 32 cm. (ref. 882)
A very rare scene - bathers in an English river! The bridge was painted on the spot by the artist next to the River Teign in Devon but the bathers were added later in the studio from life study sketches. A couple looking down from the bridge were later removed to avoid embarrassment to the young ladies."Watching The Hens".
Watercolour on Saunders paper, 37 by 28 cm. (ref. 924)
Painted from five photographs and a looped videotape. The detail was carefully studied and the painting constructed to show a wide angle of view and at the same time give the impression of the large scale of the barn interior."Getting Ready for the Party: Venice in the Afternoon".
Watercolour on Saunders 200 lb paper, 29 by 38 cm. (ref. 853)
The canal entrance to a palazzio with a girl in the first floor window. Note how Don has managed to create detail of the ornate gate by painting the dark areas between the metalwork and leaving the paper exposed. This is unusual because masking was not employed for this purpose."The Conversation: Delft".
Watercolour on 24 by 31 cm 150lb paper. (ref. 1119)
This painting was based on a very detailed sketch looking down a side alley in the historic part of the town (Jan VerMeer lived nearby) All the old brickwork has been carefully rendered and the figures were a combination of sketches and figures modelled with Poser 3D graphics."Notre Dame".
Watercolour on Saunders paper 33 by 43 cm. Private collection.
This famous cathedral has been viewed from across the Seine and its height has been dramatised by the artist. A watercolor painted from a detailed drawing Don Lavelle made in situ in Paris.
