A surprise gift for the man of the house. The house is actually hidden behind dense trees and bushes and Don was able to create a clear view of the house as requested. Watercolour 50 by 38cm on 300lb paper. Private collection. "The Spinney" is a watercolour of a house on the edge of a village in Somerset. It was started by Don Lavelle outside and finished in the studio over a number of weeks. Direct and indirect watercolour methods were utilised. Private collection. The client wanted the painting to harmonise with this beautiful area in Wales. Don chose to feature a little more of the house than could be seen from his temporary hilltop studio. Watercolour 54 by 37cm on 300lb paper. Private collection. An extremely wide view designed to show a farm nestling in a gentle Welsh valley. There are many details added to make this into a very special gift to the farmer from his wife. This large watercolour painting took four one-day field trips and many hours in the studio to complete. A multitude of techniques were used on a 69 by 49cm sheet of 300lb paper. Private collection. "A View Down New Market Street, Usk ". Watercolour on heavyweight paper 40 by 30 cm. Private collection. "Rose Cottage". An historic house which was painted exactly to the patron's wishes - in fact a second painting from another angle was also created on request. Initial sketches were carried out directly on the paper with further sketches and photographs to get the details correct back in the studio. By the way, the slant on the 'trap house' to the left was not an error in perspective; it has been accurately recorded. This is 47 by 35cm on 300lb paper. Private collection.
