"Rough Channel Crossing: Heading For Home".
Watercolour on hot-pressed paper, 30 by 16cm. (ref. 1218)
A bold type of composition with the yacht sailing out of the picture to the left. Although this a small painting, Don has crammed much detail into the sea and one really needs a magnifying glass to appreciate the details on the boat."Squadron In Port: HMS Victory"
Watercolour with body colour on 200lb size 60 by 45 cm paper. (ref. 833)
A squadron of first rate ships - including HMS Victory - are anchored ready to make sail to distant waters. A boat is taking some young officers to their next commission. Don used scale models to get the accuracy of the details in this very large painting."Ships In Storm".
Watercolour 26 by 32cm. (ref. 665)
18th century warships running before a storm created by the artist from several sources."Running Before the Storm".
Oil painting 47 by 62 cm on primed hardboard. (ref. 951)
It is early evening on the South Atlantic and a Glasgow-built clipper ship is running under reduced sail. The sea was slowly developed and supplementary studies used for details. The ship was copied from a model constructed by the artist."Land Ho!"
Watercolour size 48 by 35 cm. (ref. 1134)
After a long, long voyage the galleon almost leaps out of the sea and speeds toward the sighting of a new land on the horizon. The artist painted this historic marine picture using one of his highly detailed model ships and his knowledge of the mechanics of waves to build up a realistic sea. Note the figures in action on the ship."North Sea patrol: HMS Iron Duke".
Watercolour 150lb paper size 48 by 32 cm. (ref. 1135)
These mighty battleships were the ultimate war machine at the beginning of the twentieth century and this painting depicts three in line-astern steaming at slow speed.
A selected, detailed enlargement of the ships is shown here.
